A peaceful night on a residential North End street turned into a horrific crime scene when a violent blaze tore through a two-storey home. Winnipeg police didn't take long to act. What started as a severe structural fire investigation quickly shifted into a homicide case after a man succumbed to his injuries and survivors faced life-altering medical trauma.
The incident took place on a Thursday evening. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews rushed to the 300 block of St. Johns Avenue at approximately 10:16 p.m. Thick, choking smoke poured from the windows of the building. Firefighters managed to bring the raging flames under control by 11:00 p.m., but the human cost inside was already devastating.
The Toll on the Residents
Three people inside the home were pulled out and rushed to local hospitals. The situation was grim from the start. Mark Bosadas Marmeto, 35, fought for his life but passed away from his injuries the following day.
The other two occupants suffered severe, permanent burns. A 53-year-old man spent days in unstable condition, while a 31-year-old woman was hospitalized before eventually being discharged. Medical professionals noted that both survivors are dealing with life-altering physical damage from the blaze.
How the Charges Escalated
Police arrested a suspect right at the scene on the night of the fire. Ismail Abdihakim Ali, 22, initially faced serious charges, including three counts of aggravated assault, multiple counts of arson causing bodily harm, and property damage.
Once Marmeto died from his injuries, the legal gravity of the situation shifted dramatically. Prosecutors upgraded the charges against Ali to first-degree murder alongside two counts of attempted murder. Ali remains locked up in police custody while the judicial process moves forward.
