If you try to launch a tactical drone from a moving patrol boat or the bed of a pickup truck, you usually run into a wall of practical headaches. Space is tight. Operators are constantly exposed to weather and enemy fire. Recovery is messy, often requiring a clumsy manual net catch or a dangerous hand retrieval on a rolling deck.

German drone developer CiS just solved that headache. The company finished final validation testing on its ORKA Dock Mini, a compact launch and recovery station built specifically for cramped spaces. Measuring just 80 by 80 centimeters (about 31 by 31 inches), the system shrinks heavy-duty automated drone operations down to a footprint that fits practically anywhere.

The timing matters. Naval forces and ground units across Europe are scrambling for reliable, automated eyes in the sky that don't require massive support vehicles or dedicated flight decks. Let's look at what this hardware actually brings to the field and why naval operators care.

Why Small Footprints Change Tactical Deployments

Most military drone stations look like massive shipping containers or require fixed, reinforced infrastructure. That is fine for a permanent forward operating base, but it is useless for a Zodiac inflatable boat, an uncrewed surface vessel (USV), or a standard military pickup truck.

CiS built the ORKA Dock Mini out of Rostock, Germany, to handle those exact tight constraints. Tom Kaufmann, the founder and CEO of CiS, pointed out that operators need absolute freedom over where they plant their airborne assets. By shrinking the original, larger ORKA Dock into an 80-by-80-centimeter box, the company made it possible to bolt an automated drone nest onto platforms that previously had to go without.

During the recent final validation trials—which notably took place at night—the system proved it could launch and recover the ORKA drone while the host vehicle or vessel was moving. That moving-platform capability is a big deal. It means a patrol boat doesn't have to dead-stop in hostile waters just to pull its reconnaissance bird back inside.

Breaking Down the Specs That Matter

Let's talk numbers because marketing claims mean nothing if the hardware fails under pressure.

The standard ORKA drone itself carries a decent punch for its size class. In its normal, untethered flight configuration, it boasts an endurance of up to 75 minutes and hits a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour (about 62 mph).

When you combine that with the Dock Mini, you get dual configuration options. You can run it untethered for standard scouting missions, or you can plug the drone into an external power supply via a tether connected directly to the dock.

That tethered trick completely removes flight-time limits. Instead of flying for an hour and returning to swap batteries, the drone can hold a stationary watch over a high-risk harbor, a convoy, or a critical infrastructure asset indefinitely.

Other operational parameters worth noting include:

  • Designed to run day or night in any weather conditions.
  • Engineered to function in sea states up to 5, which handles rough wave heights up to roughly 2.5 meters (8 feet).
  • Versatile enough to mount on uncrewed surface vessels, uncrewed ground vehicles, or conventional military logistics trucks.

The Shift Toward Autonomous Vessel Integration

This mini dock doesn't exist in a vacuum. It follows hard on the heels of CiS unveiling its larger enclosed ORKA Dock earlier in May 2026 at the Combined Naval Event in Farnborough, England. That larger version caught immediate attention from NATO navies after proving it could autonomously launch and recover drones from a moving FLANQ Q-RECON 24 uncrewed surface vessel during the SeaSEC 2026 naval security exercise in Rostock.

Naval operators are aggressively moving toward uncrewed systems to keep sailors out of the line of fire. But a USV is only as good as its payload. If a small surface drone has to travel blind without an organic aerial scout looking over the horizon, its tactical utility drops sharply. Pairing a tiny automated dock with a small surface drone gives small navies a reconnaissance capability that used to require a much larger ship.

What Happens Next

CiS is preparing to ship the very first production unit of the ORKA Dock Mini to an undisclosed naval customer. Expect other defense procurement agencies to take a hard look at these compact modular pods as they try to upgrade legacy fleets on tight budgets.
