Why One 75 Year Old Woman Blew Her Entire Life Savings At A Single Salon

Why One 75 Year Old Woman Blew Her Entire Life Savings At A Single Salon

Imagine selling your home, liquidating your jewelry, and draining three million yuan—roughly Rs 4.3 crore—just to chase youth at a local spa. That is exactly what happened to a 75-year-old woman in Shanghai, identified by her surname Yu, whose multi-year spending spree at the Yongqi Beauty and Hairdressing Company only came to light when her daughter finally uncovered the financial wreckage.

When stories like this surface, people usually point fingers at the victim, asking how anyone could be so careless with their retirement fund. But scratch beneath the surface and you find a predatory mix of high-pressure cosmetic marketing, emotional vulnerability, and an industry that preys on appearance anxiety among seniors.

The Anatomy Of A Rs 4 Crore Salon Trap

Yu had been visiting the salon network and its linked medical beauty clinic, Rouyi, since 2016. What started as routine maintenance snowballed into an astronomical financial drain. Billing records later examined by her daughter showed an endless loop of high-ticket cosmetic procedures: meridian massages, skin tightening, thread lifts, alongside eyebrow and lip tattooing.

The pricing structure alone reveals predatory exploitation. According to reports from outlets like the South China Morning Post, many of these services were billed at ten to twenty times standard market rates. A single multi-procedure lip tattooing session cost 39,800 yuan, which translates to about Rs 5.7 lakh. Worse, records indicated she underwent procedures multiple times even when medical standards required no repetition.

Yu later admitted she didn't track the mounting bills closely because she mistakenly assumed she was financially comfortable, having funded her lifestyle largely by selling her home. By the time her family realized what was happening, Yu couldn't afford rent and had resorted to selling her remaining jewelry to stay afloat.

Bizarre Bills And Fake Medical Procedures

The exploitation didn't stop at overpriced facials. Salon staff routinely referred Yu to a partnered medical beauty establishment called Rouyi, where things took an even stranger turn.

Invoices from Rouyi included a staggering 300,000 yuan—roughly Rs 42.8 lakh—charged for an "intimate care" procedure. Investigators and family members discovered that Yu paid the fee, but the clinic never actually performed the service. Instead, they substituted it with generic skincare treatments. To make matters stranger, the bills featured cryptic line items like a "space capsule" and a "happiness chair," services Yu couldn't even explain or identify. Bizarrely, Rouyi charged these amounts directly through Yongqi's corporate account, blurring the lines between separate business entities.

When confronted by media, a Yongqi employee offered a defense that felt insultingly routine: they claimed Yu herself repeatedly demanded the treatments due to severe appearance anxiety, and that pricing was clearly displayed on boards. The salon eventually offered a partial refund of her advance payment as a compromise, but the damage was already done.

Why Vulnerable Seniors Are Prime Targets

The beauty and wellness sector operates on emotional leverage. For older adults grappling with physical signs of aging, aggressive sales associates often act as surrogate friends, building a false sense of trust before pushing expensive, unnecessary packages.

When you combine aggressive upselling with seniors who may lack digital literacy or the capacity to track complex, multi-layered billing statements, financial disaster is bound to follow. It is an industry loophole that requires strict regulatory oversight, especially when physical storefronts morph into high-pressure financial extraction machines.

Protecting elderly relatives requires more than occasional check-ins. Families need to monitor recurring automated charges, review physical billing statements, and keep an eye out for sudden lifestyle changes or asset liquidations.
