Somewhere in that mix, a residential street was christened Trump Avenue. For about twenty-five years, residents lived on it without much fuss. It was just another quirky nod to Manhattan real estate.
That changed as political tensions mounted. In 2021, residents tried to strip the name themselves. The local vote ended in a deadlocked 21-21 tie. Half the residents wanted a fresh start, while the other half just didn't want to deal with the bureaucratic nightmare of updating their driver's licenses, utility bills, and mortgage paperwork.
The Lake Ontario Spark That Lit the Fire
The current push isn't happening in a vacuum. It follows a direct provocation from Washington. Donald Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as Lake America, ignoring the fact that the lake's name has centuries of history predating modern Canada.

Will It Actually Happen?
Don't expect the street signs to change overnight. Canadian municipal law isn't built for overnight spite-renaming.
First, the city has to clear an upcoming municipal election cycle. Second, and most importantly, the street's residents hold veto power. Under local rules, more than half of the property owners on Trump Avenue must formally vote in favor of any name change. Given the 2021 tie, getting consensus will be an uphill battle. Property owners care far more about property values and mail delivery routing than scoring points against the White House.
Some local politicians admit the whole exercise is a distraction. Trade policy, lumber tariffs, and the future of the CUSMA trade agreement matter a lot more to the Canadian economy than what a small residential lane in Ottawa is called.
