The base of the building, known as the stylobate, features a gentle rise of about six centimeters in the center. But Goriely's calculations show these adjustments are either entirely imperceptible or completely unsupported by any hard historical records.

If the curves aren't complex optical hacks, why are they there? The answer is likely much more practical and grounded in everyday craftsmanship.

A curved stylobate makes a lot of sense if you want to keep rainwater from pooling in the center of a massive stone platform. As for the curved columns and subtle irregularities, builders often leaned toward organic shapes because they simply looked more pleasing and felt less rigid than stark, sterile geometry. Ancient artisans relied on intuition, aesthetics, and practical masonry rather than twentieth-century optical physics.

We tend to over-romanticize ancient civilizations. We project our modern obsession with precision onto the past, assuming that every ancient structure was mapped out with god-like foresight.
